What e-Matrica is
Hungary’s toll product is fully digital. Cameras and enforcement systems read your plate against a central database. There is no sticker to forget on the windscreen.
National or county?
- National vignette: tolled motorways and expressways countrywide — best for long transits or unpredictable detours.
- County (megyei) vignette: cheaper when your real route stays inside one or a few counties. Ideal for local hops or border triangles — but easy to get wrong if you detour.
Use the official map on the operator site before you buy. A bargain county pass is expensive if one exit pushes you into another region.
Character-perfect plates
A single wrong letter or digit can mean no coverage while the camera still sees your car. Pay special attention to O vs 0 and I vs 1, and to trailers that sometimes need their own entitlement.
Timing
Pick a start moment that matches when you first need tolled access. If you are unsure, buy before you enter the network rather than relying on last-second grace rules.
Enforcement
Hungary is known for dense camera coverage and cross-border fine delivery. Treat motorway access like airport security: have entitlement before you merge onto tolled lanes.
